The 3 Little Pigs and Sales

Yes, it’s related to a childhood story that you’ve heard many times, but that you have never heard like this.

In the old story of the 3 little pigs, the wolf arrives to the house of straw. He huffs and puffs, and blows the house down.

This sends that little pig to seek shelter with the 2nd little pig in his house of wood. Of course, the wolf arrives and blows that one down too.

The first 2 little pigs run off to join the 3rd little pig who has built his house of brick. The wolf is unable to blow that house down and leaves exhausted.

The 3 little pigs are safe from the wolf.

The end… or is it?

In the old story, that’s the end. 

But in the world of sales, we’re barely getting started.

You see, the wolf had been taught in ‘Hardcore Closing School’ never to take “NO” for an answer. He was going to make the sales to these pigs, whether they wanted his product or not.

So he came back to the brick house with a sledgehammer to start destroying the brick house so he could make a sale.

Of course, the 3 little pigs fled once again. This time they went to the house of a 4th little pig.

(I know, you haven’t heard about this little pig.)

The 4th little pig had built a house out of an old railroad car that could withstand the repetitive blows of the wolf’s sledgehammer. 

Sure it was loud and their ears were ringing, but at least the 4 little pigs were safe… for now.

Since the wolf had taken the “Oath of the Hardcore Closer” he refused to stop.

Maybe you’ve already guessed it. The wolf got a wrecking ball to bust out the end of the steel boxcar so he could make the sale.

All this time, the 5th little pig had been observing the sales tactics of the wolf. He was hard a work building a pig sanctuary that was safe from hardcore closing wolves.

The 5th little pig built a castle, complete with a moat and drawbridge. So far the wolf hasn’t been able to breach it. But trust me, he’s plotting and scheming because “hardcore closers don’t quit”.

What’s the moral of the story?

Of course, there are a few key points we can take away from the story.

First, the hardcore closers are never going to stop. 

And they make sales harder for all of us… (unless we have a completely different approach).

Second, your prospects feel like the little pigs.

They have been relentlessly chased, pushed, and manipulated. They have felt the sting of making bad decisions because of all this sales pressure.

And they have built defenses to protect themselves. Who can blame them?

I’m guessing there are areas in your life where you feel like a little pig being chased by a wolf, and you’ve built walls too.

Third, resistance is the natural response to pressure.

Every time we’ve been pressured, tricked, or manipulated… we build stronger defenses.
